FUMING residents say their picturesque town is infested with flies and reeks of “boiled chicken and death” – but no one knows why.
The Environment Agency is investigating the “stench” in the Suffolk village of Eye.
Residents in the Suffolk village of Eye claim the area reeks[/caption]Locals said that the bad smell has caused an “epidemic” of flies – with the village shop now dedicating a whole table to stopping the insects.
Wayne Duffy told the BBC: “The smell is quite potent. I think it smells like boiled chicken and death.”
Sally Butcher said: “We do smell it. It depends what the wind direction is – but going past it is really bad.
“I have noticed it’s getting worse, it’s not nice at all.”
She added that Eye and other nearby villages have “terrible issues with flies”.
Local factories Shazan Foods and Cranswick Country Foods have been fingered as the source of the smell.
The Environment Agency said it is working with both factories to “determine the cause”.
A spokesman added that the agency had received a “number of complaints about bad smells near to food processing factories in Eye”.
Mid Suffolk District Council said: “We will continue to liaise with the Environment Agency and pass on all and any complaints.
“We appreciate how upsetting unpleasant odours can be, particularly during hot weather when doors and windows are open and people want to enjoy their gardens.”
It comes after residents living next to the UK’s smelliest factory said the odour is so bad it’s made them suicidal.
Shazan Foods and Cranswick Country Foods have been contacted for comment.
